In the weeks leading up to the release of their latest LP, Death Magnetic, Metallica did very little in the way of actual promotion for the effort. They didn’t make the late-night TV rounds or appear on any talk shows. The album’s September 12 release date came and went with very little fanfare and the record still went on to scan close to 500,000 units in just three days, earning Metallica their fifth-consecutive chart-topping debut.

Four weeks later, the album has passed the million-sold mark and will be at #5 on the Billboard albums chart next week. And even though they’re not hurting for publicity, Metallica will make their first North American live television performance of the year (they have appeared on TV in the U.K.). On October 16, the band will take the stage when the annual Los Premios MTV Latino America 2008 take over Guadalajara, Mexico. The awards, which will be held inside the Auditorio Telmex, will air live at 9 p.m. ET, only on MTV Tr3s. Metallica will be performing the first single from Death Magnetic, “The Day That Never Comes.”

Pain and his record company sent out cease-and-desist orders to put “Silver and Gold” on permanent pause, but its popularity was even greater than Pain’s official first single, “Can’t Believe It,” during its initial launch.

“That pushed the single back, then we had to push the album back,” Pain said. ” ‘Can’t Believe It’ was getting overtaken by ‘Silver and Gold.’ It was just a lot.”

Songwriter Beau Dozier: Asked about reports that earlier surgery was not as successful, Barker said, “It was a misunderstanding. I woke up from my surgery with no pain medication at one point! Imagine how that would feel! But the doctors here are amazing.”

As for how much longer he might be in the hospital, Barker optimistically said it shouldn’t be more than two weeks if all goes well. “I hope not much longer. I sit here and read books and watch TV,” he said. “I have had outstanding support from my family and friends. Shanna has been here as much as she could be. I couldn’t do it without them.”

Two new singles by Beyonc� premiered on the radio Wednesday (October 8) in advance of the November 18 release of her upcoming album, I Am … . One is the dance track “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and the other is a more introspective ballad called “If I Were a Boy” � two songs that represent two different sides of the singer, as she suggested in a letter to fans last week.

The singer recently opened up to Essence magazine about some of the influences on the album, which include hubby Jay-Z and playing Etta James in the movie “Cadillac Records.”

B recorded 60 to 70 songs for the album (only 10 made the cut), but 40 of them turned out to be about love, she said. “There’s a balance,” she told the magazine. Meaning the love is reciprocated? “Yeah,” she giggled. “Definitely.”

While “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” acts sonically as a sequel to “Get Me Bodied,” “If I Were a Boy” is unlike anything Beyonc� has done before. “It’s broad,” she told Essence. “But I had to try it, because I remember Aretha Franklin said a great singer can sing anything and make it her own.”

According to Wayne’s attorney, Stacey Richman, the rapper flew overnight to make Monday’s hearing, which was continued until Wednesday.

“He is the utmost, consummate professional,” Richman said of Wayne’s red-eye trip to New York. “He recognizes his entertainment obligations, his business obligations and his obligations to the court.”

When asked about his VMA afterparty plans by MTV News on Saturday night, Wayne did not mention the court date.
